St Mary Redcliffe’s 1st XI suffered a disappointing 55-run defeat away to Barrow Gurney on Saturday after being unable to chase down a formidable target of 297 in their Bristol & District Cricket Association Fourth Division clash at Hobbs Lane.
Having won the toss and elected to field, Redcliffe made an encouraging start when Colin Veal struck twice to remove both opening batters, leaving Barrow Gurney 64-2. However, the home side rebuilt impressively through a dominant partnership led by captain Mark Brown. Brown produced the innings of the day, smashing 115 from just 86 deliveries, including 15 fours and 5 sixes. He shared important stands with Ed Holdaway (35) and Josh Yelland (55), helping Barrow Gurney accelerate throughout the middle and latter stages of the innings. Despite wickets from Veal (2-45), Udeepa Munasinghe (1-55), Shehan Chathuranga Yapa Appuhamilage (1-49) and Jerry Joyson (1-41), the hosts posted an imposing 296-5 from their 40 overs.
In reply, Redcliffe’s chase got off to the worst possible start when Ian Bush was dismissed for a duck in the opening over. Vishnu Manikkam briefly counter-attacked with 17, but it was Udeepa Munasinghe who gave the visitors genuine hope with a superb knock. Munasinghe dominated the Barrow Gurney attack, striking 85 from just 64 balls, including 13 fours and 3 sixes. Together with Shehan Chathuranga Yapa Appuhamilage (34), he added valuable runs to keep Redcliffe in touch with the required rate.
However, once Munasinghe was dismissed with the score on 173, the chase began to lose momentum. Lower-order contributions from Juwel Talukder (33 not out), Jerry Joyson (20) and skipper Jason Loud (19) kept the scoreboard moving, but the required rate continued to climb. Barrow Gurney’s bowlers shared the wickets, with Paul Gard leading the way with an excellent 3-38, while Mark Fisher and Frank Forge each claimed two wickets. Redcliffe eventually closed on 241-9 from their 40 overs, falling 55 runs short.
2ND XI
Bedminster 5th XI secured an impressive 65-run victory over Barrow Gurney 2nd XI at Chew Stoke Cricket Club on Saturday, overcoming the disappointment of losing the toss to post a commanding total before producing a disciplined bowling display in a rain affected game.
Asked to bat first in this Bristol & District Cricket Association Eighth Division West fixture, Bedminster recovered from an early setback when Jake Boud fell for just two. Vibhor Mathur followed shortly afterwards without troubling the scorers, leaving the visitors under pressure at 2 wickets down.
The innings was then transformed by a superb knock from Zayn Khair. Displaying patience and authority throughout, Khair compiled a magnificent 96, narrowly missing out on a deserved century. He found valuable support from Jack Vereker, whose well-made 50 provided the perfect platform for Bedminster’s innings. With Jacob Witcombe remaining unbeaten on 15 and contributions lower down the order, Bedminster closed on a competitive 198-5 from their 29 overs. For Barrow Gurney, Linden Alway and Nishanthan Satkunanantham each claimed two wickets.
Facing a challenging target, Barrow Gurney’s reply never gained sustained momentum. Stanley Bailey struck an early blow by removing opener Will Thompson without scoring, before Lee Davis produced a crucial spell to dismiss both Matt Edgar (20) and Satkunanantham.
Although Abe Gibbs (19), Linden Alway (27) and Dave Terrington (24 not out) offered resistance, Bedminster’s bowlers maintained control throughout the chase. Michael Bennett, Jake Boud and captain Ashton Chritchlow each chipped in with a wicket, while wicketkeeper Brennan Elphick claimed a smart stumping to further dent the home side’s hopes.
Barrow Gurney finished on 133-6 from their 29 overs, leaving Bedminster victorious by 65 runs.
