1st XI:
Bitton CC 1st XI produced a superb batting display to defeat Barrow Gurney CC by 33 runs in an entertaining Bristol & District Cricket Association Fourth Division clash at Hobbs Lane.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, Bitton piled up an imposing 270-5 from their 40 overs, thanks largely to an outstanding partnership between Sheraz Raja Muhammad and Muhammad Ramzan.
Bitton made a steady start through Lee Swindlehurst (17) and Muhammad Talha Murad (20), before Sheraz Raja Muhammad took control of the innings in devastating fashion. The aggressive middle-order batter smashed 91 from just 62 balls, striking 12 fours and three sixes in a commanding display of clean hitting assisted by some dropped catches. At the other end, Muhammad Ramzan provided perfect support with a fluent 61 from 51 deliveries, including nine boundaries and two maximums. The pair shared a match-defining fourth-wicket partnership worth 117 runs, swinging the momentum firmly in Bitton’s favour after they had slipped to 69-3.
Oliver Fowler then added valuable late runs with an unbeaten 30, helping Bitton accelerate strongly in the closing overs.
For the hosts, Ed Holdaway was the standout bowler with 2-27 from eight economical overs, while Kieran Owen also claimed two wickets.
In reply, Barrow Gurney’s chase never fully recovered from the early loss of Kieran Owen for a duck. Captain Mark Brown counterattacked with 28, but it was Ed Holdaway who kept the home side in contention with a magnificent century. Holdaway played superbly for his 101 from 86 balls, hitting seven fours and five sixes, and shared important partnerships with Jason Cryans (40) and Josh Yelland (20). At 206-4, Barrow Gurney still had hopes of chasing down the target.
However, Bitton’s bowling attack held its nerve brilliantly in the closing stages. Muhammad Ramzan capped a memorable all-round display by ripping through the lower order to finish with outstanding figures of 5-35 from 7.2 overs. Liam Mansfield also contributed with two key wickets, while Sheraz Raja Muhammad chipped in with another breakthrough.
Once Holdaway was dismissed for his excellent century, Barrow Gurney quickly lost momentum and were eventually bowled out for 237 in 38.2 overs.
2nd XI
Bristol New Eleven produced a disciplined all-round performance to secure a comfortable six-wicket win against Barrow Gurney CC 2nd XI in the Bristol & District Cricket Association Eighth Division West.
After losing the toss at St Bede’s Catholic College Sports Complex, Barrow Gurney were asked to set a target but struggled to build momentum against a controlled Bristol New Eleven bowling attack. Despite starts from Linden Alway (21), Phil Milton (18) and Nishanthan Satkunanantham (26), regular wickets prevented the visitors from establishing a substantial innings as they were bowled out for 143 in 40 overs.
Francis Ambrose led the way with an excellent opening spell, finishing with 2-10 from eight overs, while Ratheesh Ayyamkulam Vasu claimed 3-23 to wrap up the tail. Sajan Sam also chipped in with two wickets, and Delmi Mathew and Sharath Siddappa took one apiece as Bristol shared the wickets around effectively.
In reply, Bristol New Eleven made a confident start through Sharath Siddappa and Sajan Sam, who added 70 for the opening wicket. Siddappa struck 23, while Sam top-scored with 32 before Barrow Gurney briefly fought back through Satkunanantham, who picked up 3-29.
At 84-4, the match was momentarily in the balance, but captain Milton John and wicketkeeper Kalesh Balakrishnan calmly guided the hosts home with an unbroken partnership. John finished on 34 not out, while Balakrishnan added an unbeaten 27 as Bristol reached 148-4 in just 28 overs.
