1st XI
Blagdon First XI continued their strong start to the season with a well-earned 23-run victory home to Barrow Gurney in the Bristol & District Cricket Association Fourth Division.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, Blagdon posted an imposing 245-6 from their 40 overs, thanks to an excellent unbeaten 80 from captain Haydon Lyons and a late flourish from Sam Barlow.
Blagdon made a positive start through Rory Stewart-Richardson, who struck 32 from just 24 balls, including three fours and two sixes. Toby Barlow added 15 before both openers fell with the score at 47. James Roscow contributed a useful 24, helping steady the innings alongside Lyons as Blagdon reached 91-4. The innings was rebuilt superbly by Lyons and Martyn Mail. The pair added 57 for the fifth wicket, with Mail making a valuable 35 from 42 deliveries. Lyons then accelerated, reaching his half-century from 53 balls before dominating the closing overs aided by the Barrow Gurney fielding. When George Wills departed for 6, Blagdon were 177-6. However, Lyons and Sam Barlow unleashed a devastating finish, adding 68 runs. Barlow hammered 36 not out from 16 balls, while Lyons finished unbeaten on 80 from 69 deliveries, including seven fours and three sixes, lifting Blagdon to a formidable 245-6.
In reply, Barrow Gurney never quite fell away but were always chasing the game. Michael Duckworth struck twice in the opening stages to remove Kieran Owen and Mark Brown, helping reduce the hosts to 70-3. The key partnership came through Ed Holdaway and Josh Yelland, who added 112 runs for the fourth wicket and briefly threatened to swing the match in Barrow Gurney’s favour. Holdaway led the charge with an excellent 79 from 69 balls, while Yelland contributed a composed 56.
With the game finely balanced at 182-4, Blagdon found the breakthrough they needed. Martyn Mail produced a match-winning spell, dismissing both set batters before ripping through the middle order. His figures of 4-35 from six overs proved decisive as Barrow Gurney lost four wickets for just 22 runs. Matt Manfield provided late resistance with an unbeaten 18, but Blagdon’s bowlers maintained control to restrict the hosts to 222-8 from their 40 overs.
2nd XI
University of Bristol Staff CC 2nd XI secured a commanding 7-wicket victory over Barrow Gurney CC 2nd XI, chasing down 170 with more than 15 overs to spare in a one-sided contest.
Barrow Gurney won the toss and elected to bat first on what appeared to be a decent batting surface. However, their innings never truly got going against some disciplined and, at times, devastating bowling from the visitors. The home side found themselves in early trouble at 34-3, with opener Phil Milton, Will Thompson, and Dave Terrington all dismissed cheaply. A partial recovery came through Jim Twine (26) and Matt Edgar, who added 45 for the fourth wicket. Edgar continued to battle, top-scoring with a 49 (51 balls, 4 fours, 2 sixes), while Chris Milton contributed 28. However, the innings was pegged back by the outstanding Matt O’Donnell, who produced a match-winning spell of 6-15 from just 8 overs (including 3 maidens), triggering a collapse from 151-5 to 169-9. Cyril Varghese picked up 2-16 in support.
Barrow Gurney eventually finished on for 169-9 in 40 overs, with an unusually high 47 extras (including 34 wides) highlighting some wayward bowling from the visitors early on, though this was more than compensated for by their brilliance in the middle overs.
The chase was clinical and ruthless. University of Bristol Staff reached the target in just 24.1 overs, losing only three wickets.
Openers George Clark (13) and Oliver Shears (26) gave them a solid start of 41, before Shears and Cyril Varghese fell in quick succession. This brought captain Alistair Brearley to the crease, and he took the game away with a dominant 71 not out (57 balls, 11 fours, 2 sixes). Brearley and Matt O’Donnell (39*) added 100+ for the fourth wicket at a rapid rate, putting the result beyond doubt.
