Midweek Success For Barrow But Not On Saturdays – More Match Reports

 

 

 

Barrow Gurney CC Friendly XI secured a narrow six-run victory over Blagdon CC in an entertaining Twenty20 fixture at Hobbs Lane.

 

Having won the toss, Barrow Gurney elected to bat and made 129 all out from their 20 overs. Blagdon’s chase got off to a shaky start, but a pair of impressive 30s from Peter Greatorex and captain Jeremy Board gave the visitors a chance right until the final over. Ultimately, Barrow Gurney held their nerve to restrict Blagdon to 123–7.

 

Barrow Gurney’s innings was built around several useful contributions. Samuel Mitchell top-scored with an excellent 32 from 26 balls, striking six boundaries before retiring not out. Captain and wicketkeeper Phil Milton added a brisk 27 from just 19 balls, hitting five fours, while Abe Gibbs contributed 18 from 31 balls.

 

The hosts reached 50 in just 7.4 overs before progressing to 100 after 14 overs. However, Blagdon fought back strongly in the latter stages, with Paul Hudd taking 3–16 and Max Board claiming 2–11.

 

Blagdon’s reply began poorly as they slipped to 28–3, with Matthew Manfield causing early damage with an excellent spell of 2–3 from three overs, including a maiden. Peter Rees-Mogg, Matt Dowle and Sam Cummins all departed cheaply, leaving the visitors with plenty of work to do.

 

Peter Greatorex then steadied the innings with a patient 30 from 39 balls, finding the boundary four times. He was joined by Charlie Board, who struck a quick 15 from 11 balls, including three fours, to help Blagdon recover.

 

The momentum shifted dramatically when captain Jeremy Board arrived at the crease. His unbeaten 30 from just 15 balls, including four fours and a six, gave Blagdon genuine hope of completing the chase.

 

With Greatorex and Board putting together the bulk of the recovery, Blagdon moved past 100 and needed 23 runs from the final six overs. However, Barrow Gurney continued to chip away at the wickets. Andy Grech was dismissed for two, before Thomas Rees Mogg and Max Board also fell late in the innings.

 

Despite Jeremy Board remaining unbeaten alongside Anselm Rees-Mogg, Blagdon finished on 123–7, six runs short of the target.

 

 

 

 

Barrow Gurney 2nd XI welcomed Bristol 4th XI to Hobbs Lane on Saturday, with the visitors eventually coming away with a convincing eight-wicket victory after chasing down Barrow’s 154-run total with more than ten overs to spare.

 

Having won the toss, Barrow elected to bat first but found themselves in early trouble. Adam Curtis was dismissed for 4, before Abe Gibbs followed for 11, leaving the hosts 27–2. Will Ryan briefly steadied the innings with a quickfire 17 from 23 balls, including two fours and a six, but his dismissal was followed shortly afterwards by Matt Edgar for 4 and Will Thompson for just 1.

 

At 50–5, Barrow were in danger of being bowled out cheaply. However, Chris Milton and wicketkeeper Fergus Skinner produced an excellent partnership to rescue the innings. The pair added 80 for the sixth wicket, taking Barrow past 100 and providing the platform for a competitive total.

 

Skinner played aggressively, striking seven fours and two sixes in an entertaining 46 from 58 balls before eventually falling with the score on 130. Milton continued on, reaching an impressive half-century from 73 balls and finishing with 54 from 82 deliveries, including nine boundaries.

 

Despite losing wickets regularly towards the end, Barrow managed to reach 154–9 from their 40 overs. Milton’s 54 was the standout contribution, while Skinner’s 46 proved equally important in rebuilding the innings.

 

Bristol’s bowling attack was well spread around, with Nareshkumar Padmanaban taking 2–24 from seven overs and each of Thomas Hargreaves, Sai Patel, Nathaniel Hale, Stephen Bailey and Om Patel claiming a wicket apiece. Om Patel was particularly economical, conceding just 16 runs from his seven overs.

 

In reply, Bristol got off to a flying start. Sid Elan smashed 20 from just eight balls, including three fours and a six, before being dismissed by Will Thompson with the score on 31. Om Patel then joined Michael Love and the pair began to take control of the chase. They added 65 for the second wicket before Patel was dismissed for a well-made 33 from 33 balls, including four fours.

 

From there, however, the game was effectively taken away from Barrow. Love remained unbeaten, bringing up an excellent half-century from 106 balls before finishing on 55 not out, having struck nine fours. He was joined by wicketkeeper Jason Llama, who contributed an unbeaten 22 from 33 balls, including two fours and a six. The pair guided Bristol to 156–2 in just 29.2 overs, completing a comfortable eight-wicket victory.

 

For Barrow, Will Thompson and Adam Curtis were the successful bowlers, taking one wicket each, while Milton and Skinner’s efforts with the bat provided the major positives from the home side’s innings.

 

Ultimately, Bristol’s ability to chase the target with plenty of time to spare proved decisive. Their top order showed excellent control after the early loss of Elan, with Love anchoring the innings and Llama providing valuable support to see the visitors comfortably over the line.

 

 

 

Bristol Aces 1st XI secured a hard-fought three-wicket victory over Barrow Gurney 1st XI at Page Park, successfully chasing 181 to finish on 182-7 from 29.3 overs.

 

Barrow Gurney won the toss and elected to bat first, with Jason Cryans anchoring the innings superbly. Cryans produced an excellent 71 from 99 balls, striking six fours and two sixes, as Barrow Gurney looked to build a competitive total. Linden Alway provided valuable support with an aggressive 34 from just 31 balls, while Phil Milton remained unbeaten on 19.

 

Despite Cryans’ excellent knock, Barrow Gurney struggled to build sustained partnerships and were eventually bowled out for 180 in 36.5 overs. Bristol Aces’ attack was led by Prasok Ramachandran, who claimed an outstanding 5-29 from 6.5 overs. Robert Fernandes also impressed with 2-30, while Kieran Owen, Paul Gard and Sineesh Syril all contributed with wickets.

 

In reply, Bristol Aces made a positive start but lost wickets regularly through the middle stages. Ben Lalu Alex contributed 19 from 15 balls, while Gopalakrishnan Sunilkumar made a patient 31 from 58 balls. Captain Robert Fernandes added a useful 25 before his dismissal left the Aces at 132-6.

 

With the game still finely poised, Sineesh Syril produced the decisive innings of the match. Coming in with Bristol Aces needing a significant contribution, Syril smashed an unbeaten 50 from just 20 balls, including eight fours and two sixes. His remarkable strike rate turned the chase firmly in Bristol’s favour and ensured the Aces reached their target with three wickets still in hand. Frank Forge picked up two wickets, while Kieran Owen and Paul Gard claimed two apiece.

Ultimately, it was Syril’s explosive unbeaten half-century that provided the difference between the two sides. After Barrow Gurney had posted a competitive 180, Bristol Aces chased the total down in just 29.3 overs

 

 

Barrow Gurney Friendly XI secured an entertaining six-wicket victory over Caieser Chiefs CC 1st XI at Hobbs Lane on Thursday evening, chasing down 150 with three balls to spare.

 

Caieser Chiefs won the toss and elected to bat first, setting Barrow Gurney a target of 150 from their 20 overs.

The visitors made a solid start, with former Barrow Gurney player, Ed Jones leading the way at the top of the order. Jones retired not out for an impressive 31, including four boundaries and a six, while Rob Parnham added a valuable 29 from the middle order. Charlie Shaw Tracey also contributed 22, striking a six and a boundary during his innings.

Jamie Lovell chipped in with 15 before being run out, while Jason Hinds remained unbeaten on 15. Despite losing five wickets, Caieser Chiefs continued to score at a healthy rate and finished their 20 overs on 149-5. Extras contributed 24 runs to the total.

 

Barrow Gurney’s chase got off to a strong start, with captain and wicketkeeper Frank Forge contributing 24, including four boundaries. Luis Parnham then added 20, helping to keep the required run rate under control.

 

Samuel Mitchell produced one of the innings’ standout performances, retiring unbeaten on 31 from the top of the order. His innings included five fours and a six and gave Barrow Gurney valuable momentum in the chase.

Josh Yelland was dismissed for four, while Matthew Manfield fell for one, but Dan Caie steadied the innings with an unbeaten 28, including two fours and two sixes. Chris Milton then finished the job with an unbeaten 17 as Barrow Gurney reached 150-4 in 19.3 overs.

 

With six wickets still in hand and just three balls remaining, Barrow Gurney completed the chase to claim a well-earned victory in an entertaining friendly.

 

There were also some strong individual bowling performances from Caieser Chiefs, with Harry Kyriazis taking 1-11 from his three overs, while Callum Powell, Will Kerswell and Charlie Blunden each claimed a wicket.

Overall, it was an enjoyable evening of cricket at Hobbs Lane, with both sides contributing to a competitive game that went down to the final over.

Golden Hill 3rd XI secured an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Barrow Gurney 1st XI at Hobbs Lane on Saturday, chasing down a target of 176 with 20 overs to spare.

 

Barrow Gurney won the toss and elected to bat, but Golden Hill’s bowlers made early inroads, reducing the hosts to 8-2. Mark Brown and Ed Holdaway then steadied the innings with a valuable partnership, before Holdaway continued to push the scoring along.

 

Holdaway produced the standout innings for Barrow Gurney, making an excellent 74 from 88 balls, including 11 fours and two sixes. He passed his half-century from 58 balls and formed useful partnerships throughout the middle order. Josh Yelland also contributed a handy 35 from 45 balls, with three fours and a six.

 

However, Golden Hill’s Matt Belbin proved particularly difficult to handle. He finished with outstanding figures of 4-16 from six overs, including the key wickets of Holdaway and Yelland. Wilf Newton also chipped in with 1-15 from four overs as Barrow Gurney finished on 175-9 from their 40 overs.

 

Golden Hill’s reply got off to a blistering start. Openers Will Webster and Zac Patterson immediately put the Barrow Gurney attack under pressure, bringing up their fifty partnership in just 35 balls. Webster was particularly destructive, racing to his half-century from only 27 deliveries, including 10 fours and a six.

 

The pair continued their assault, reaching 100 in just 11.3 overs before pushing the opening partnership beyond 150. Webster went on to bring up a magnificent century from just 57 balls, eventually finishing with a superb 104 from 60 balls, including 19 fours and two sixes.

 

Patterson provided excellent support, scoring 45 from 49 balls, with seven boundaries, as the opening pair put Golden Hill firmly in control. Their partnership eventually ended at 152 when Patterson was dismissed by Josh Yelland. Webster followed shortly afterwards for 104, caught by Mark Brown off Paul Gard.

 

By then, however, the damage had been done. Max Davis and Matt Belbin calmly completed the chase, with Belbin hitting three boundaries in his unbeaten 14 from just seven balls. Golden Hill reached 179-2 in 20.2 overs, completing a convincing eight-wicket victory.

 

 

 

Bristol Malayalee posted a commanding 257-9 before bowling Barrow Gurney out for 180 to secure a 77-run victory and maximum points.

 

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Malayalee made a strong start. Openers George Vinky (49) and Arundas Vadkkechalil (50) put on 97 for the first wicket. Both fell to Abe Gibbs, but Asif Hussain then took control with an outstanding unbeaten 85 (11 fours, 2 sixes) from 81 balls. He received useful support lower down, notably from Philip Thomas Palakkattu (18), as the innings closed on 257-9 from their 40 overs. Adam Curtis was the pick of the Barrow Gurney attack with 4-47; David Smith and Abe Gibbs claimed two wickets apiece.

 

In reply, Barrow Gurney reached 153-3 with Ajit Hegde (53) and Matt Edgar (48) both making useful contributions. The game turned sharply thereafter. Bimal Kumar Sudevan (4-33) and Rupesh Krishnan (3-18) ripped through the middle and lower order, triggering a dramatic collapse that saw the last seven wickets fall for just 27 runs. Barrow Gurney were all out for 180 in 34.1 overs.
