Last Ball Thriller In T20 Opener

Another good crowd at Hobbs Lane watched a thrilling T20 match with the home side taking on Babcock.

The visitors won the toss and batted on a balmy evening and Paul Powell (27) soon got into his stride and accompanied by Andy Smith (33*) put on 57 before retirements exposed the Babcock middle order to the in-form Kian Ware who struck 3 times (3/8) to add to his impressive start of the season.

Babcock’s appropriately named Freddie Ferrari was fast out of the blocks adding 25 quick runs before retiring whilst their lower order struggled against Guy Fisher’s leg spin. With 2 run outs, one exceptional with Phil Milton throwing down the stumps from cover, Babcock still attained a very competitive 143-8.

In reply Barrow struggled in the early overs, the loss of Guy Fisher for only 1 being a shock to the system. With Kian Ware taking time to get going and Phil Milton being caught off a top edge, Barrow were only 52-2 at 10 overs. Ali Hood (21) and Jonny Sykes came together and the fact that Babcock fielded with 12 soon became irrelevant as they hit several boundaries between them, with Jonny clearing the ropes twice with clean straight hits as only he can do!

Jonny Sykes retires after a swashbuckling 25 to be replaced by Ellie Holdway who would hit the winning runs

The fall of Ali and retirement of Jonny left Scott Fisher and Ellie Holdaway with a run a ball to get and the excellent Babcock fielding made it hard to achieve. With Eliie needing 2 to win and 1 to tie off the last ball of the match, she clipped one of her legs wide of square leg to bring the home side to victory.

Another good close game and a lovely summer’s evening at Barrow with much needed income taken at the bar.

Next Thursday sees the Misfits visiting.
