Barrow 2s Enjoy First Win As Sunday Team Falter

Barrow 2s tasted a first success of the season at Patchway where a slow pitch made batting tricky. Opener Mark Gracey (48) led the way with good judgement of what to defend or attack, and after some early scares at the other end, he eventually found good support in Peter Rooney (27) and David Smith (22 not out). Barrow finished on 156-8.

Early wickets were vital, and Simon Hudson supplied these taking 4 for 32 aided by 3 good catches by stand in keeper Steve Allen. Mike Lilley (2/17 off 8 overs) then bowled with unerring accuracy to stifle any chance of a recovery and when Seb Allen dismissed the Patchway skipper it was a matter of time until the game was won by 43 runs.

Peter Rooney’s 27 was a vital contribution in a low scoring game.

Barrow’s Sunday XI were up against a Hanham team at Hobbs Lane, having played another Hanham team the day before. Batting first Barrow batted slowly, with several players getting starts, before Frank Forge who had previously dropped anchor, cut loose to hit 22 runs off the last over with a mixture of ramp shots and reverse sweeps. He finished on 61 not out, having previously received good support from Steve Webb in a 45 run partnership, leaving Barrow on 181-8. Hanham made a much better fist of their reply than on Saturday knocking the runs off for the loss of 3 wickets in 27.3 overs.
