Another Narrow Defeat Away For Firsts As 2s Trounced At Home

Barrow Gurney First XI just came out on the wrong side of another close game this week.

Travelling to Pak Bristolians, some good bowling and some excellent catching appeared to be about to restrict the home side to a manageable total, but some late hitting moved them onto 231-7. There were wickets for Matt Owen (2/49), Frank Forge (1/22), Kieran Owen (1/29), Jonny Sykes (1/49) and Guy Fisher (1/36) whilst keeper Bernie Forge took 2 brilliant catches off skied shots.

Barrow’s reply stuttered until Guy Fisher (31) and Jordan Allen (48) came together and kept the side in touch. With some quick scoring needed off the last few overs Jonny Sykes (22) and Kieran Owen (32 not out) tried hard but the steady loss of wickets made it impossible to get quite close enough, ultimately finishing 14 runs short.

It was a day to forget at Hobbs Lane for the Second XI, who were overwhelmed with bat and ball by a youthful and talented Winterbourne team which took full advantage of 6 dropped catches to amass 316-2, to win by 268 runs in poor light.
