AGM Report & Captaincy Teams for 2020 Announced

Barrow Gurney CC held its AGM last Sunday at the Angel Inn, Long Ashton and 23 members attended to hear of the progress the club has made in the last year and to elect the committee and captains for the coming year.

Frank Forge and Ed Holdaway will continue to lead the 1st XI aiming to build on a promising season when they fell only 15 runs short of achieving 3rd place in Division 5 of the Bristol & District League. In 2020 the team will face: Abbots Leigh 1s, Bath 4s, Brislington 3s, Bristol 3s, Bristol Lions 1s, Chilcompton 1s, Claverham 2s, Congresbury 2s, Hanham 2s.

Adam Brace takes over as captain of the 2s.

There is a new captaincy team for the 2nds as Adam Brace steps up to captain, he will be supported by the experienced Paul Gard. The news that the team will retain its place in Division 13 where they will play some old friends and rivals was welcomed by all. Their opponents in full: Carsons Mangotsfield 2s, Coalpit Heath 3s, Hanham 3s, Midsomer Norton 3s, Old B’s Westbury 4s, Patchway 2s, Pucklechurch 2s, Thornbury 4s, Winterbourne 5s.

Colin Fletcher will captain the Sunday XI with Mark Forge standing in as required as vice-captain.

Chairman, Pete Holdaway, told the meeting of the improvements made in the last year, as, assisted by grants from the ECB, the club has acquired new roll-on covers and upgraded its catering facilities. This winter is going to see a major redecoration of the pavilion.

After a year in which Barrow Gurney has not had a junior team for the first time in years, the committee were please to report of an initiative to develop a friendly under 17 team with existing Barrow players inviting friends to play and learn the game. Meanwhile at senior level the club were delighted that whilst other clubs continue to struggle for players, that 3 full teams have been put out every week. However the club still aims to increase its playing squad for the coming year and welcome some new players.

Sunday 3rd XI – Colin Fletcher (C), Mark Forge (VC)

In addition Rod Reeves and Pete Shiner are willing to be co-opted as committee members.
