Barrow Gurney’s losing run continued on Saturday as Blagdon claimed a 54-run victory at Hobbs Lane after posting an 250-8 from their 40 overs. Despite a determined effort in reply, Barrow were eventually dismissed for 196 in 38.4 overs.
After losing the toss and being asked to field, Barrow made an encouraging start with Mark Fisher leading the way. The seamer produced an outstanding spell, taking 4-28 from his eight overs, removing the dangerous top order including James Roscow in his second spell and dangerous opener Toby Barlow in his first. Ed Holdaway also chipped in with a wicket, while James Plowman and Frank Forge claimed one and two wickets respectively.
However, Blagdon recovered superbly through an excellent fourth-wicket partnership between Roscow and captain Haydon Lyons. Roscow anchored the innings with a composed 67 from 88 balls, while Lyons shifted the momentum dramatically with a powerful 70 from just 54 deliveries, including seven fours and four sixes. Their stand propelled the visitors beyond 200 before late contributions from Martyn Mail (30) and Tom Garnham (10*) lifted the total to a formidable 250-8.
Faced with a challenging chase, Barrow struggled to build meaningful partnerships as wickets fell at regular intervals. Jordan Allen (17), Ed Holdaway (30) and Matt Edgar (16) all made starts but were unable to convert them into significant scores. Samuel Mitchell provided the resistance the innings desperately needed, striking an entertaining 50 from 52 balls with three fours and two sixes to briefly keep hopes alive. Frank Forge also played positively for his 18, including a six, but once Mitchell departed with the score on 178, the chase was effectively over.
Blagdon’s attack shared the wickets well, with Martyn Mail claiming 3-36, Adam Burroughs and Michael Duckworth taking two apiece, while Tom Garnham, Ed Deane and William Greatorex each picked up one wicket as Barrow were bowled out for 196.
Although the result didn’t go Barrow’s way, Fisher’s excellent four-wicket haul and Mitchell’s fighting half-century were standout performances on a difficult afternoon against one of the division’s stronger sides.
