1st XI
Barrow Gurney got back to winning ways with a solid 37-run victory over Bristol Aces in a high-scoring encounter at Hobbs Lane.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Barrow Gurney made a flying start, reaching 50 in just 8.2 overs. However, Bristol Aces fought back strongly with the ball, led by an excellent spell from Robert Fernandes, who claimed an impressive 4-22 in 8 overs, including the key wickets of openers Kieran Owen and Jordan Allen, plus Mark Brown and Matthew Manfield.
The innings was rescued and then dominated by Ed Holdaway, who produced a magnificent century. Holdaway remained not out on 106 off 75 balls (15 fours, 3 sixes), having batted originally at 4 but having to come back in at 9 due to an emergency. He shared a crucial 9th-wicket partnership of 120 runs with Frank Forge (20 not out), which took the score from a 119-8 past the 200 mark. Barrow Gurney eventually posted a competitive 239-8 from their 40 overs.
Chasing 240, Bristol Aces made a fast start, reaching 50 in 7.5 overs and 100 in 18 overs. However, they lost very regular wickets falling to 73-6, with James Plowman doing the bulk of the damage, taking 3-44 and Mark Fisher taking 2-37Sarath Raveendran top-scored with a well made 63, while Sineesh Syril provided a quick 35. The pair added 52 for the 7th wicket, keeping the game alive. However, once Syril fell, the required rate climbed too steeply. Though the Aces were on the rate the wicket column proved the issue with the Barrow bowlers backed up in the field. The visitors were eventually bowled out for 202 in 34.3 overs.
2nd XI
Barrow Gurney CC 2nd XI edged a thrilling low-scoring contest by just 5 runs as they defended 215 to beat Bristol CC 4th XI, who finished on 210-9 from their full 40 overs.
After winning the toss, Bristol elected to field first. Barrow made a shaky start, losing Adam Curtis for a duck and Will Thompson for 5, but recovered strongly through a series of useful partnerships.
Matt Edgar (52 off 29 balls, 12 fours) and James (56 off 44 balls, 9 fours, 1 six) were the standout performers, injecting momentum into the innings. Linden Alway added a quickfire 33 (including 3 sixes) to push the total past 200. Bristol’s bowling was steady but expensive at times. Aaron Peel and Nathaniel Hale both took 2 wickets apiece, with Hale particularly economical (2-6 from 2 overs). Isaac Miller (2-27) and Stephen Bailey (2-65) also picked up wickets, but Barrow’s middle order accelerated well to post a competitive total in just 35.3 overs before being bowled out.
Chasing 216, Bristol got off to a flying start with an excellent opening stand of 142 between Isaac Miller (58 off 80) and Leo Bann (58 off 67). The pair looked in control and put Bristol firmly in the driving seat.
However, once Bann was run out and Miller departed shortly after, the innings lost momentum. Matt Edgar was the pick of the Barrow bowlers, claiming 3-34, while Linden Alway (2-20) and Adam Curtis (2-29) applied pressure in the middle and death overs.
Lower-order resistance came from Chris Mills (15) and a few cameos got Bristol close but they fell agonisingly short, finishing on 210-9.
