Ali Hood reports on the BGCC Autumn Golf Day:
Our latest golf day took place on Monday (2 October) depending on whether you have the Gardy view on life or the more positive outlook we were either unlucky or blessed with the weather! The morning conditions were fine but we did get some rain in the afternoon but compared to the forecast earlier in the week and the rain experienced elsewhere and later in Bristol we got off lightly.
We were once again at Thornbury, chosen because it enables us to have a full day playing the par 3 course in the morning & the Marlwood main course in the afternoon.
Despite some creaky and rusty looking early shots scoring was generally good on the par 3, where we play off 50% handicap allowance (although this still gave Frank a shot per hole to much dismay from the group!)
There were a couple of 36 point rounds from Martin & myself but the standout performances were from Gardy fresh off the plane from Japan with 39 points but just pipped by Frank with 40 who claimed the par 3 victory.
Conversation over lunch centred around who was favourite to take the overall title (basically how many points would need to be scored to overhaul Gardy & Frank – confidence was generally high that neither would maintain their form – Frank because its much longer and Gardy because he was exhausted!)
Guy was the star of the afternoon winning the longest drive, which was no fluke as he drove really well all day, nearest the pin (which wasn’t very near but was on the green which was more than most it appears!) and the afternoon course win with 38 points including 25 on the front 9! Unfortunately a dip on the back 9 and his poorer morning score meant he was not in contention for the overall title.
Before we get to the final result it should be noted that when the first group arrived back they found the last group of Gordy, Shiner & Geoff ‘the ref’ Warren already sat contentedly in the bar – they had decided after 11 holes that with the inclement weather they had had enough!
Despite the best efforts of some of the ‘better’ golfers ultimately Frank’s short but straight hitting, taking advantage of his two shots per hole, was able to add 35 points to his morning 40 & triumph with an overall score of 75 – Well played Frank a well deserved victory as regardless of what your handicap is playing to it (or better) across the whole day is a fine effort.
If anyone is looking to play golf over the winter why not use the BGCC What’s App group to meet up with your fellow cricketers for a hit – plenty of us need practice before our next golf day in March date TBC but provisionally Monday 25th March.
Thanks to all for a great day
