While Sunday snow bizarrely forced the cancellation of senior indoor nets, some committed Barrow players were not to be defeated taking to their gardens for a bit of extra practice!
Meanwhile on Saturday Barrow Gurney CC Under 15s had an indoor cricket single wicket competion at Merchant’s Academy to brush the cobwebs away, and the cobwebs can feel well and truly brushed! As Pete Holdaway reports:
Ben Thorne kicked off with a show of cuts and drives hitting the ball with panache and only being dismissed once due to a swing across the line to Leo Brace. He totalled 48 – good start Ben.
Enter Cameron Bullock stage right, who, after a year in exile due to age (Barrow having only under 13s last year, he was 14) again proved he has an eye for the bad ball, but now has developed a drive through mid-wicket, not seen before! He also played a good selection of off-side shots. The final score was 67, which included facing a demon over from Melisa Owen which threatened to bowl him every time. Top score Cam!
Third in was Leo Brace playing a mixture innings of careful defence whilst punishing the half-volley as Leo usually does. Without being dismissed, Leo amassed 33, a character innings for which he is well known.
Wielding the willow next was Lucas Tait, famous for his opening knock last season versus Blagdon where he batted the entire innings bar one ball and kept the side together (I don’t know where he gets it from!). Lucas thrashed a ball from Cameron hard to cover amidst applause from the crowd only for Leo to take the calmest of catches one handed whilst reading the paper!! Lucas batted on in stalwart fashion keeping out good yorkers from Mel and co., – 11 classy runs.
Next in was Melissa, who arrived at Merchant’s with cricket and Hockey kit, such is her sporting life. The first half of Mel’s innings saw her continue in the vein of Lucas with careful defensive play. Then she unleashed some powerful straight hitting to the back wall with consecutive 6’s and numerous 4’s. Without a cross-bat in sight, Mel equalled Ben Thorne on 48, a pleasure to watch!
Last, but not least, at Merchant’s was Jake, who joined us only last year, and is playing catch up in his cricket. But he was equal to most of the bowling and certainly despatched anything outside leg, of which there was probably too much. Well batted Jake, a creditable 11, and would have been more but for some slick fielding at fine leg.
And good to see Luke Thorne turn up after his Saturday morning boxing session (nobody’s arguing with that!!). Well done Luke.
Thanks to Nick Fisher for umpiring and Sarah Thorne for scoring.
With other players waiting in the wings the prospects for 2018 look more than encouraging ! So next up is outdoor practice starting FRIDAY APRIL 20TH , 6PM-8PM at Hobbs Lane (weather permitting!!) Under 15 matches then follow on Monday evenings.
