As the nation prepares to cast its vote for another Sports Personality of the Year, all cricket lovers will be hoping strong vote for Somerset’s own Anya Shrubsole after her World Cup winning exploits last summer.
This month the BGCC website gives Barrow Gurney members and supporters the chance to vote for its very own Sports Personality of the Year for the very first time.
Why not cast your vote now for one of the nominees:
Frank Forge
Joint top wicket-taker for the club this season, Frank bowled accurate spells for the 1st XI and often proved unplayable on a Sunday, whilst adding some lower order cameos with the bat and sometimes amused with some unpredictable fielding. Self-professed former head of banter at Chew Valley School, Frank now uses the banter to good effect on the cricket field as well as at university.
Pete Holdaway
Top scoring batsman for the 2nd XI, Pete made his runs with style and panache, always alert for the square cut to anything short. He also took one of the best catches you will ever see from a ball which came through fast and head-high. This year Pete was at times in danger of letting his inner competitive spirit get the better of him, but that only went to show his love for fair play and Barrow Gurney cricket.
Oscar Livesey
Oscar was also joint top wicket taker for the club, and enjoyed a successful year flitting between the teams. In the field Oscar was full of chirp and not so-subtle hints to the skipper about having a bowl. Meanwhile with the bat his unique style of calling and quirky defensive technique never failed to cause amusement. When his batting moved into attack mode he showed just what a clean striker of the ball he can be.
Rod Reeves
A left handed version of the famous David Steele from days of yore, Rod showed typically dogged defence, frustrating bowlers of all types with the nurdle behind the wicket on either side. In one of most dramatic moments of the season Rod was felling by a bouncer, hit of the side of the jaw. In a gutsy fight back, he then took on the bowler and went on to top score in the innings. An amazing advert for septuagenarians!
James Riley
James was top scorer for Barrow this year having moved up the order to occupy the all rounder’s position as well as being vice-captain. He continued to be the top bowler in the first team proving a handful to all teams bustling in to bowl with sharp pace. On a Sunday he was an enthusiastic wicket keeper at times, occasionally a slow left-armer and always on hand to offer advice. A great club man, offering help with junior players and upholding the family honour by winning the annual quiz. Will be a huge loss if he has a sabbatical next season.
