Geoff Warren RIP

Geoff Saunders writes: It is with deepest sadness that I heard of the sudden death of former 1st team captain and former Chairman Geoff Warren who sadly passed away on Monday 12th May. Geoff leaves behind his wife Lyndsey, along with his children Lucy, Dan and Chris.

Geoff was without doubt one of Barrow Gurney’s finest ever batsmen scoring countless runs over many years. He was a captain of note, winning promotions and cups with the club in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Along with great friend Paul Mizen, Geoff helped run the highly successful junior section that included his own sons Dan and Chris, helping the club to thrive in the 2000’s and beyond. Towards the end of his playing time Geoff helped future generations of players leading the Sunday XI that included many of the players he helped coach as juniors.

Off the pitch Geoff was instrumental in arranging the water supply to the ground (owing to his work at Bristol Water,) development of the pavilion and the purchase of theland the ground is on. Geoff was present at the Centenary of the club and Chair at the 125th.

Outside of cricket Geoff was an international rugby referee and, later, TMO of note; in addition, he was a former Chairman and Life Member of the Bristol Referees Society helping train and develop others.

I personally, and us as a club, owe Geoff a debt of gratitude for his work on and off the field, as well as his support and his friendship. Geoff’s presence and warmth will be sadly missed by us all.

Both the 1st and 2nd teams held one-minute silences before their weekend games against Chew Valley CC and Bristol CC this weekend.
