Double Wicket Winners Overcome Weather To End 2017 Season

Barrow Gurney ended the cricket season in traditional fashion with the coveted double wicket competition. Having lost 2 friendly games to the weather after the end of the league season, the double wicket might also have been a victim of the recent rain. A delayed start, and use of the artificial wicket enabled the competition to go ahead as 8 teams battled with each other and an almost incomprehensible scoring system to seek to reach the final.

In the qualifying phase, we were treated to a Jonny Sykes hat trick, some big hitting from current and past players and some comedy fielding due in part to the extremely wet outfield but also due to the state of some players who had partied hard the night before!

As always there was a degree of uncertainty as to who was in the final until scorer, Jane Holdaway, announced the results.

Jonny Sykes and Phil Milton were to play Matt Owen and Ed Holdaway in the final. This proved to be a thrilling affair although Ali Hood seated in the square leg umpire position seemed somewhat underwhelmed. It all came down to the very final ball, but Ed and Matt ran out the winners and won the shield for this year.

Meanwhile the spectators enjoyed a barbecue and their final look at the lovely Hobbs Lane ground for another year.
