Barrow Gurney Cricket Club’s annual awards evening was held at the iconic venue of the County Ground in Bristol.
Organised this year by Connor Jones, members and guests enjoyed a lovely 3 course meal, while Mark Fisher had provided a presentation of some of the best action photos of the year and slides with all the important statistics.
First Team Captain, Frank Forge, presented the James Shield for the player of the year to Mark Brown in recognition of his impressive season with the bat. Mark scored 453 runs for the First Team at an average of almost 65 and was a key part in several team wins.

Mark Gracey won the Stan Ladd Shield for the Second Team Player of the year, presented to him by Captain Peter Rooney. He was the most consistent performer with the bat across the season playing in virtually ever game and scoring 363 runs at an average of almost 28 in a batting line up which was quite fragile when First Team squad members were not available.

Mark Forge announced the Clubman of the Year award (John Glover Shield) was going to Adam Brace for his help working on the ground and pavilion over recent years. Sadly Adam was not able to be there to receive his award.
Nor too could the recipient of the Norman Moody Cup awarded to the player who had made the biggest breakthrough in 2022. Nick Heal was the winner having made some big scores in the Seconds before making serious contributions with both bat and ball. In true Sports Personality style Nick received his award by videocall!

It was a really enjoyable evening for those who were able to attend and marks a relaunch of the annual dinner. Next year the surroundings may be a little more modest but hopefully the tradition has been reinstated!
As a footnote, Geoff Saunders has researched previous award winners of the three premier shields, and previous winners are shown below. As you can see this year’s winners join illustrious company:
