Whilst it was “business as usual” at last night’s Barrow Gurney CC’s AGM in many ways, there were a few changes in personnel for next year.
With 2017 First Team Captain, Paul Glazzard, choosing to stand down after one year in charge; and vice-captain and Player of the Year, James Riley, announcing he is taking a break from playing Saturday cricket for Barrow next season, a change was required for 2018. Whilst the search for longer term replacements from the younger generation of players takes place, former captains Phil Milton and Ali Hood were asked to consider acting on a job-share basis to start the season. There were no other significant changes to the committee (full details of which are at the end of this article).
The AGM, was presided over by Club President, Brian Mayled. Chairman Pete Holdaway reported on a frustrating year for the 1st and 2nd teams despite playing some good cricket. Paul Glazzard reported that the 2 point margin by which the 1st team were relegated could so easily have been changed by greater awareness of bonus points by younger players, as well as a couple of rain-affected games.
Meanwhile the 2nds seem likely to remain in Division 13 following another reorganisation of the league. Ellie Holdaway and Mark Gracey remaining at the helm for next season.
The Sunday 3rds had a much better season that might have been expected and successfully developed young players and allowed senior players to find form. Mark Forge and Steve Owen continue to steer the team into a second season in the re-vamped North Somerset Cricket League.
Off the field of play, the new female changing room has now been built and is in the course of being fitted out. The scorebox is being upgraded and the new sightscreen at the Fox & Goose End is underway. In the pavilion, the new bar area was deemed a great success.
Treasurer, Dick Pillinger, reported on a successful year financially with the club having sufficient funds to carry out its immediate development goals.
The club will shortly be surveying members about continuing with the annual tour and what changes may help to make it better supported by members.
The focus over the winter though is to try and identify someone who could take on the junior section, to bring new young cricketers into the club and help with coaching so that we can re-establish Under 11 cricket at the club, advertisements will be placed shortly.
