Spring Golf Day Honours Go To Ali

Ali Hood reports on the spring golf day which he organised and won!

The spring golf day finally took place at Thornbury Golf Club a month after it was originally scheduled when it  was postponed due to the course being largely underwater!

The weather was better, well at least dry and although still boggy in parts it was in pretty good condition.

13 of us teed on the par 3 with varying degrees of success, with some participants not having picked up a club since our last event in October! That seen even the committed among us were a bit under golfed due to the non-stop rain we have had pretty much since the end of the cricket season.

I should have written this report straight away as i have now lost the scoring sheet, so apologies to anyone who had a good score &  I fail to mention you but from a sketchy memory I think Jonny H, Connor, Martin & Fletch all scored well in & around 36 points. However Ali pipped them to take the par 3 honours.

By the afternoon the wind had got up considerably & it was quite tough conditions. We had 16 for the afternoon so had a team comp choosing the best 2 scores per team on each hole & everyone’s scores on the par 3’s. One team was disqualified as half their team abandoned their round after 15 holes but it was close with only 4 points separating the other teams with  the winning team being Nick, Ali, Kieron & (with limited contribution) Frank.

My highlight of the day as my group came up the 7th was watching Connor (it could only be Conner!) sprinting back to the 8th tee driver in hand to re-hit his drive having been unable to find his first ball. He then proceeded to duff his drive not very far & was left stranded some 200 yards from the rest of his clubs, I think he gamely tried driver off the deck before accepting a blob!

Melt down/angry man award almost certainly went to Gardy or Nick but I am open to other nominations. Ball finder of the day narrowly pipping Jonny’s very liberal interpretation of 3 minutes searching time  was Guy. Regrettably as I didn’t win nearest the pin or longest drive  my brain has failed to retain the details of who did actually win either accolade but well done to whoever it was!

Scoring wasn’t great in the afternoon generally, allowing Ali to prevail for the 2nd time to claim victory for the afternoon & overall individual competition (despite skying his first tee shot into the woods much to everyone’s amusement).

My thanks once again to everyone who played, and for paying without the need for chasing which is always appreciated when organising the event.

Next event will be Sept/Oct time
